Lachlan is a Cyber Security Analyst with almost two years of experience in Security Operations, specializing in threat monitoring, triage, and incident response across SIEM, EDR, and XDR platforms, including Microsoft Defender and Sentinel towards mid-market to enterprise clients.

Day to day, he leads incidents through to closure, works alongside detection engineering to cut down alert noise, and runs proactive threat hunts. He’s currently working toward more hands-on, specialist roles in Threat Intelligence, Digital Forensics, and Incident Response, and this blog is where he documents that journey along with the interests that make him tick.

Wrote a case study breaking down FakeCaptcha / ClickFix attacks, covering detection, the psychological manipulation behind them, and how the malware delivery chain actually executes delivering Lumma Stealer.

Competitions

WorldSkills Lyon 2024, International Competitor

Lachlan competed in WorldSkills Lyon 2024, representing Australia in cybersecurity alongside his teammate, Kai. The pair placed 13th out of 20 competing countries.

The competition ran across four days, each covering a different cybersecurity discipline:

  • Day 1: Networking and Infrastructure setup
  • Day 2: Forensics and Malware Analysis
  • Day 3: Red teaming (CTF-based)
  • Day 4: Log analysis (SOC)

PECAN+ OSINT Presentation — Co-Presenter alongside Steve Simpson

At PECANCTF+, Lachlan co-presented with Steve Simpson who is a very well known cyber expert in Perth, Western Australia with over 40 years in the industry. They both guided the students in explaining OSINT fundamentals to Year 9 to 12 students, covering what OSINT is, its real-world power, and how it’s applied across different scenarios.

CASSA Event — Co-Presenting alongside Steve Simpson

Lachlan co-presented with Steve Simpson at a CASSA (Computing and Security Student Association) event, sharing both of their stories involving their journeys entering the cybersecurity industry and offering tips for improving students’ chances as candidates when applying for cybersecurity roles.

International WorldSkills Competitor — Public CTF Prep

Over three days from 8:00am to 3:30pm at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre, Lachlan and his teammate Kai completed a series of CTF challenges to prepare for their International Cybersecurity competition in Lyon, France. While solving these challenges, their live investigations were displayed on a big screen at the Convention Centre where onlookers watch them solve these cyber challenges

International WorldSkills Competitor — Blue Team Global Skills Competition

Lachlan competed in a Blue Team based Cybersecurity Global Skills Competition, representing WorldSkills Australia against 8 other countries. The Blue Team component covered:

  • Malware Analysis (Static & Dynamic)
  • Digital Forensics and Incident Response (DFIR)
  • Log Analysis
  • Report writing on mock incidents

The competition took place over three days.
